Crossover Collective – a tool for collective embroidery – addresses contemporary societal problems. The social machine affords a group of people the opportunity to sit together and make a combined piece of embroidery on a length of cloth, encouraging communication and teamwork.
Nijdeken believes that modern society sees people spending less time with each other and more in the company of technology.
By bringing people together to work on a common goal, Crossover Collective stimulates conversation and interaction. The small space and the act of making something together encourages people to engage with tradition and take part in group activity.
Nijdeken’s aim is to work as a mediator in designing conditions where social structure can grow. Integral to the design is the stimulation of ‘mutual trust, understanding and positive energy’ between groups of people such as families, organisations and businesses.
